RACKET GUIDE / 4 MIN READ

How to choose your first padel racket

A practical checklist for finding a racket that fits your game, your budget and the way you like to play.

Your first racket is a personal choice. Before you compare finishes or decide which player level describes you, think about the sessions you actually want to play. An occasional social game and regular coaching may lead you to different priorities.

Start with three questions

  • How often do I expect to play?
  • What felt comfortable or awkward about the rackets I have already borrowed?
  • What is my total budget, including court time and any lessons?

If you have not played yet, ask your venue whether you can borrow or hire a racket for an introductory session. That gives you something concrete to compare with when you start shopping.

Make the shortlist manageable

Pick two or three candidates. Write down what the seller actually confirms about each: weight, balance, materials, price and returns. Leave a blank where information is missing. A dramatic product name or a professional endorsement cannot tell you how that racket will feel in your hand.

Do not treat a player level label as a qualification you need to earn. Use it to narrow your search, then assess the individual racket.

Try familiar shots

During a demo, use the same short sequence with each racket: a few gentle rallies, some controlled volleys and a handful of serves. Keep the aim simple. Can you send the ball where you intended without constantly changing your swing?

Write down your impressions immediately. “Comfortable to hold” and “easy to get ready for the next ball” are more useful notes than “felt premium”. Ask a coach to help interpret anything you are unsure about.

Choose the finish last

Once your shortlist makes sense, enjoy choosing the colour. Pink, graphite or a lighter finish can express your style without needing to describe your ability.

Explore P30, P50, P65 and P90, choose your finish and find the NORYX that matches your game.

GETTING STARTED / 3 MIN READ

Your first padel session: what to know

What to ask your venue, what to bring and how to make your first visit feel straightforward.

You do not need to arrive at your first padel session knowing every shot. Give yourself a straightforward introduction: a suitable session, the right information from the venue and enough time to settle in.

Book a session that welcomes beginners

Ask whether the booking is an introductory class, a coached group or an open game. Check the expected level, how long it lasts and whether the venue provides a racket and balls. If you are booking alone, ask how players are matched.

The LTA Padel website brings together information on getting started, finding courts, rules and beginner skills. It is a useful place to begin your search. Visit LTA Padel ↗

Pack a small court bag

  • Your booking details and the venue address.
  • Comfortable sports clothes and footwear accepted by the venue.
  • Water and any personal items you normally need for exercise.
  • Your racket, if equipment is not included.

Ask the venue about its footwear requirements before you travel. Arrive early enough to check in, meet your group and hear the introduction.

Ask for a rules demonstration

Before the first point, ask your coach or host to demonstrate the serve, explain the scoring and show how the walls come into play. Seeing a point played slowly can make the explanation easier to remember. Agree which scoring format your group is using.

Ask how to use the racket wrist strap and where to wait while another group finishes. Follow the coach’s instructions for your warm up and session.

Give yourself one useful goal

For a first visit, a simple goal might be learning the scoring or getting comfortable with short rallies. You can ask questions between points and let the group know you are new.

Before you leave, note one thing you enjoyed and one thing to ask about next time. If you borrowed a racket, record its name and what you noticed about it. Those observations will help when you are ready to choose your own.

ON COURT / 4 MIN READ

How to get more from a racket demo

A simple way to compare rackets and record feedback that you can actually use afterwards.

A demo is a chance to learn what you like. Set yourself a few repeatable tasks and record the result while the experience is fresh. The aim is to make a more informed choice, even if that means deciding you need another session.

Give each racket a fair comparison

Where practical, use the same court, partner and balls. Check the grip setup with the person running the demo and note any differences between the rackets. Give yourself time to settle into each one instead of judging everything on the first shot.

If you compare several rackets, try the first one again at the end. You may notice that warming up, tiredness or simply getting used to the drill has influenced your impressions.

Use a short sequence

  1. Begin with controlled rallies to a comfortable target.
  2. Try a few volleys with your partner feeding at a similar pace.
  3. Play a short sequence of serves and returns.
  4. Finish with points that reflect the way you normally play.

Choose shots you already know. Ask a coach to adapt the sequence to your level. This is a personal comparison exercise, not a laboratory measurement of a racket’s performance.

Write observations, not just scores

For each racket, note how it felt to hold, how easy it was to prepare for the next ball and which shots felt more or less predictable. Add a specific example beside each impression. “I felt late on three fast volleys” gives you something to discuss; a single overall score does not explain much.

Include the racket name, finish, grip setup and approximate session length. Keep any published specifications separate from what you personally felt.

Leave room for a second opinion

Talk through your notes with the demo organiser or coach. A different grip setup or another session may change your preference. You do not have to make a purchase decision on the spot.

Help shape the NORYX launch

We plan to evaluate our samples and gather player feedback before confirming the range. If you would like to hear about testing opportunities, select testing interest on the first access form. Programme details will follow when ready; registering does not guarantee a place.
